A new baby is both hugely rewarding and challenging. There are a number
of services available at The Rycote Practice to help you during this
important period.
After birth, the midwifery team will visit you once you are at home with
your baby. They will provide support and assistance for up to 28 days
after delivery.
The health visitor team are available after this to provide advice,
support and help for your baby and for you.
Breast Feeding
There is lots of evidence that breast feeding is the best option for
both you and for your baby. But it can be difficult, and it is important
not to feel guilty if you decide it is not for you or if you are
struggling. There is lots of support available in the community.
Postnatal breast feeding assistance is available 24 hours a day at St
George's Ward in Wallingford. All midwives who work there, and those who
visit you at home, have been credited with the Baby Friendly Breast
Feeding Award by UNICEF (in conjunction with the World Health
Organisation).
There are also breast feeding clinics at the John Radcliffe Hospital and
Stoke Mandeville.
The health visitors are also able to give advice on breast feeding.
Post-natal GP appointment
All new mums are encouraged to see their GP at 6 weeks for a check-up.
You will automatically be sent an appointment. This is an opportunity to
talk over how you are, and is for you rather than your baby. Your GP
will help with any concerns you have about the delivery, and check
that there are no on-going problems you would like to talk about. It is
also a chance to discuss contraception and to make sure you have the
support you need.
If you feel you need to see a doctor before your 6 week check, you can
book an appointment as normal.
